Resoled
Part of speech: verb, noun, adjective
Definitions
- Fitted a fresh outer sole to a worn shoe or boot, replacing the part that touches the ground
- Gave a pair of footwear a new bottom layer after the old sole had worn through
- Replaced the worn underside of a shoe with a new sole so it could be worn again
Etymology: "Resoled" is the past tense and past participle of "resole," which means to fit a new sole to a shoe. It is an inflected form, so its story is that of the verb it comes from. "Resole" is built from the prefix "re-", meaning again, attached to "sole," the underside of a shoe, which English took from Latin "solea," a sandal, through Old French. The prefix goes back to Latin "re-," meaning back or again, and it reached English through Old French, where it appeared in the same sense. Put together, "resole" literally means to put a sole on again, which is exactly what a cobbler does when the worn underside of a shoe is replaced rather than the whole shoe.
