Resegment

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. Dividing something once more into fresh sections or parts, often to reorganize how it is grouped or arranged
  2. Breaking a whole back into segments a second time, usually to create a different structure or sequence
  3. Splitting data, a document, or a market into new divisions after an earlier segmentation has been made

Etymology: "Resegment" is a plain formation: the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "back," attached to "segment," a verb meaning to divide something into distinct parts. Together they describe dividing something a second time, typically into new or revised parts. The base "segment" comes from Latin "segmentum," a piece cut off, from "secare," to cut. That root also gave English "section," "dissect," and "insect," the last named for its body divided into segments. Because "segment" is a verb in its own right, "resegment" follows the ordinary pattern of adding "re-" to a verb to mean repeating the action.
