Etymology: This is an inflected form, so the account is brief. "Rescanning" is the present participle and gerund of the verb "rescan", which is simply the prefix "re-", meaning again, attached to "scan". The "re-" prefix came into English from Old French and ultimately from Latin "re-", a sense that makes "rescan" a plain statement of "scan once more." The verb "scan" goes back to Latin "scandere", meaning to climb or ascend, and its sense of examining closely by measuring or counting came from that climbing root. Its use for looking over a surface with a device is a much later extension, and "rescan" inherits that modern sense of repeating a digital or mechanical survey.
