Etymology: "Rerecord" is a plain formation: the prefix "re-", meaning "again," attached to "record." The base verb "record" came into English through Old French from Latin "recordari," meaning "to remember" or "to call to mind," which itself was built from "re-" and "cor," the Latin word for "heart." The old idea was that memory lived in the heart, so to record something was to bring it back to the heart, and the sense of setting something down in writing or on a medium grew out of that. Because "record" already carried the idea of preserving something for later, adding "re-" simply signals a second capture. The prefix is an active, productive one in English, so new verbs like this one could be formed easily whenever recording technology made the need arise.
