Etymology: "Requalifying" is the present participle of "requalify", which combines the prefix "re-", meaning again, with "qualify". The prefix "re-" passes into English through Latin and Old French, while "qualify" comes from the same Latin stock, so the new verb simply means to qualify a second time. The base verb "qualify" carries the older sense of making someone fit for a role or status, and "requalify" applies that idea to a person or thing that has already passed such a test and must do so again to keep its standing. Professions that require periodic recertification, such as nursing or aviation, are where the term is most at home.
