Etymology: "Republishing" is simply the present participle and gerund of "republish", so the story belongs to its parts. The prefix "re-" comes from Latin, where it carried the sense of "again" or "back", and it arrived in English through Old French. The verb "publish" was borrowed into Middle English from Old French, which had taken it from Latin "publicare", meaning to make public, from "publicus", public. Put together, the verb means to make public a second time. The prefix does the same job in many English pairs, such as "rebuild" and "rewrite", so "republish" follows an ordinary pattern rather than a special one. Because "republishing" inherits the sense of the verb, it names the act of putting out again something already in print or circulation.
