Etymology: "Reproduce" is formed in English from the prefix "re-" added to "produce," so the verb's meaning is simply "produce again." "Produce" itself came into English from Latin "producere," meaning "to lead forth" or "bring forward," built from "pro-" (forward) and "ducere" (to lead). The idea of leading something out into view is still visible in the sense of producing a copy: the copy is brought forward again from an original. The verb "reproduce" therefore carries two layers of meaning: the prefix "re-" signals repetition, while the base "produce" supplies the sense of bringing something into existence or presenting it. When someone reproduced a document or a picture, they brought forth a new version of something that already existed. The past form "reproduced" is simply the ordinary inflection of the verb, so it adds no separate history of its own.
