Repressurization

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. The act or process of restoring pressure within a closed space or system to a desired level after it has been reduced or lost
  2. The restoration of normal or increased pressure in an environment, such as a cabin or container, following a period of depressurization or pressure loss
  3. The procedure of reestablishing adequate pressure in a confined area or apparatus to maintain safe or proper operating conditions after pressure has dropped

Etymology: Repressurization is a plain formation: the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "back to a former state", attached to "pressurization", the noun for the act of pressurizing. "Pressurization" itself is built from "pressure" plus the suffixes "-ize" (to make or subject to) and "-ation" (the act or process of), so the whole word describes the act of making a sealed space or vessel hold its pressure again after it has been lost. The word is most at home in aviation and spaceflight, where cabins, suits and tanks are routinely depressurized and then brought back up to working pressure. Its meaning is therefore literal and mechanical rather than figurative: the restoration of a previously lost pressure level.
