Etymology: "Repost" is a plain compound: "re-" meaning again, attached to "post" in the sense of putting something up for public view. The verb is simply "post" with "re-" added, so "reposts" is the third-person singular form, used for someone who shares an item again. The "post" part carries the older history. It traces back through Old French and Middle French to Latin "posta" (a place where something is put), and it entered English in the sense of a fixed station or a mail stop. The idea of placing something in view is what makes sense of the online meaning: a post is something set up where others can see it, whether on a noticeboard or a website. The prefix "re-" came into English from Latin and French, where it has long meant "back" or "again." Its use in forming new verbs from existing ones is what lets "repost" describe sharing something a second time without needing a new base word.
