Etymology: "Repost" is a plain formation: the prefix "re-", meaning "again," attached to "post," which in English means to send or publish something, as in mail or online content. The word is built entirely from English parts, so there is no foreign root to unpick. The second element has a longer history. "Post" traces back through Old French and Italian to the Latin "ponere," meaning "to place" or "put." Its Latin past participle "positus" gave Italian "posta," meaning a placed station or relay, and Middle French "poste" carried that sense of a fixed stop or staging point. English borrowed it as "post," originally a fixed place or station, and only later did it come to mean a dispatch of letters carried between those stations. Online "posting" extends that old idea of placing something where others can receive it. Adding "re-" to this gives the sense of placing or sending something once more, which is how the word has come to describe sharing content again after its first appearance.
