Etymology: "Replates" is simply the third-person singular present form of "replate", so the verb itself is what needs explaining. The base word "plate" comes from Old French "plate", which passed into Middle English as "plate" and traces back through Vulgar Latin "platta" to ancient Greek "platús", meaning "broad" or "flat". The idea of a flat, broad surface is what gave us the thin sheet of metal, and later the dish. The prefix "re-" comes from Latin, where it meant "again" or "back", and entered English through Old French. Put together, "replate" means to coat a surface with metal once more, typically to restore worn silverware or other metalwork. "Replates" applies that action to a single subject, as in "he replates the old candlesticks."
