Etymology: "Repinning" is simply the present participle and gerund of "repin", which in turn is formed from the prefix "re-" (again) attached to "pin". The "re-" arrived in English through Old French from Latin "re-", ultimately tracing back to the Proto-Italic root for "back" or "again", so the verb's sense of attaching once more is built directly into its parts. The base "pin" is far older than the prefix. It descends from Proto-Germanic "pinnaz", a word for a peg or pointed fastening, which became Old English "pinn" and Middle English "pinne" before settling into the modern noun and verb. A pin is, at its heart, a small pointed peg, and every act of pinning is an act of driving that peg into place.
