Etymology: "Repaste" is about as plain as English compounds get: the prefix "re-", meaning again, attached to "paste", so the word simply means to paste again, which in practice means to glue something back together. The base "paste" has a longer road behind it. It traces back to the Ancient Greek "pastá", a term for a savoury mixture or a barley-based dish, which later passed through Late Latin "pasta" and Old French "paste" into Middle English as "paste", meaning dough or a moist mixture. The sense of "paste" as an adhesive came along later, from the idea of a thick, sticky mass of flour or similar material used to hold things together. That is why a verb meaning to fix with glue can grow out of a word once tied to food and dough.
