Etymology: "Repairing" is the present participle and gerund of "repair", so it covers both the ongoing act of mending something and the act itself as a noun. That earlier sense came from Old French "repairier", from Late Latin "repatriare", "to return to one's country," built from "re-" and "patria" (homeland). "Repatriate" comes from the same root.
