  3. a series of modified artistic interpretations created by layering new paint over an existing work

Etymology: "Repaintings" is the plural of "repainting", which is a noun formed from the verb "repaint" with the suffix "-ing". The verb itself is built from the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "anew", and "paint", which came into English from Old French "peint", the past participle of "peindre", meaning "to paint". So the word is simply a layer of "again" added to a long-established English verb. Its plural form reflects the way the noun is used: each separate occasion of applying fresh paint, or each new version of a painted work, counts as one repainting. An artist or restorer can speak of several repaintings of the same canvas, each one covering the layer beneath.
