Etymology: "Reoccurrence" is a plain formation: the prefix "re-", meaning "again," attached to "occurrence," the noun from "occur." "Occur" itself came into English from Latin "occurrere," meaning "to run toward" or "to meet," built from "ob-" ("toward, against") and "currere" ("to run"). So an occurrence was originally something that ran up to meet you, and the sense of an event "happening" grew out of that image of something arriving. The word was formed by adding "re-" to "occurrence" after "reoccur" had already taken shape, so the noun follows the verb. Its meaning is simply an event happening again after an earlier instance, which is why it fits so readily into descriptions of patterns, such as a symptom returning or a problem resurfacing.
