Etymology: The "occupation" at the root of this word once meant seizing or taking possession of something. It comes from Latin "occupatio," from "occupare," which combines "ob-" with "capere," "to take." English kept that sense for centuries, as in the occupation of land, before "occupation" also came to mean a person's trade or regular work. "Re-" is the Latin prefix meaning "again" or "back," so the word literally means taking possession again. Its sense of resuming roles or duties builds on that later meaning of "occupation" as one's work or position. The plural "reoccupations" simply counts separate instances of this act.
