Etymology: "Renewer" is about as transparent as English compounds get: it is simply "renew" with the agent suffix "-er" attached, so it names whoever or whatever renews something. "Renew" itself comes from the Old English prefix "re-" meaning "again" and "new," so the whole word means one who makes something new again. The suffix does most of the work here. English has long used "-er" to turn verbs into nouns for doers, as in "baker" or "teacher," and "renewer" follows that pattern exactly. The meaning sits neatly on top of the verb: a renewer is anyone or anything that brings back freshness, strength or validity to something that has faded or lapsed.
