Etymology: The verb "render" in the sense "cause to become" is a much later development than its everyday meanings. Its core idea is "give back" or "hand over": Latin "reddere" meant "make, give back," and that sense passed through Old French "rendre" into Middle English, where "renderen" covered surrendering, delivering up, and returning things. The meaning "cause to become" grew out of the notion of delivering something into a particular state, so to render someone speechless is to hand them over to that condition. The verb's other familiar senses, such as translating or depicting, follow the same thread of giving something back in a new form. A translator hands back the source text in another language, and an artist hands back a scene in paint.
