Etymology: "Remount" is a plain formation: the prefix "re-" ("again") attached to "mount" ("to climb onto"). Its earliest route into English, though, ran through French. The verb came from Anglo-Norman "remunter" and Middle French "remonter," both meaning to climb or go up again, and English later reinforced it by adding "re-" to "mount" directly. The two strands merged into one word, so the English verb carries both the French inheritance and the native-style combination of prefix and base. The sense is literal at heart: to get back up onto a horse, bicycle or other mount after dismounting or falling. The word's core idea of climbing back into a position is still visible in that everyday use, which is why it is most often heard in riding and cycling contexts.
