Etymology: "Remixes" is the plural of "remix", a noun for a new version of a recording built by reworking the elements of an original track. The word is simply a compound of "re-", meaning again or anew, and "mix", which in English has meant to combine or blend materials together since the 1500s. The earliest parts of the chain reach back through Latin "re-" and the Proto-Italic root behind it, but the word itself was assembled in English from these two familiar pieces. The sense of "mix" that makes "remix" possible, blending sounds together into one recording, comes from the twentieth century, when studio engineers began combining separately recorded tracks into a finished piece. A "remix" was therefore a second blend of material that already existed, the same tracks rearranged rather than new performances.
