Etymology: "Reminiscing" is simply the present participle of "reminisce", so its history is really the history of that verb. "Reminisce" was formed by back-formation from "reminiscence", a noun that came into English from Latin "reminīscēns", the present participle of "reminīscor", meaning "to remember". In other words, the noun was taken into English first, and the verb was later built from it by stripping off the noun ending, which is why it looks shorter and more casual than its parent. The Latin root is the same one behind "reminisce" in its original sense of calling something back to mind. The "re-" prefix points back, and the rest of the stem carries the idea of memory, so the whole word is essentially "to remember again". The verb form then took on the ordinary business of recalling pleasant or personal past events, which is the sense the word carries today.
