Etymology: Remineralized is simply re- plus mineralized, the past participle of "remineralize," so it is the past form of a verb rather than a word with its own separate history. "Mineralize" comes from "mineral," which entered English in the early 1600s from Medieval Latin "minerale," meaning something dug from a mine, and the verb "mineralize" appeared in the 1700s with the sense of turning a substance into a mineral or impregnating it with mineral matter. The prefix re- ("again," from Latin "re-") was added in the 20th century, when scientists working on dental enamel and bone began describing the return of lost calcium and phosphate to tissue.
