Etymology: "Remarking" is the present participle and gerund of "remark", so the story belongs to the verb itself. The root idea is literal: "remark" comes from Middle French "remarquer", built from Old French "remarquer", which combines "re-" meaning "again" with "marquer", "to mark". To remark on something was originally to mark it again, singling it out for notice, and the sense of noticing shaded into the sense of saying something about what was noticed. The word passed into English through the same French chain, and its core meaning of picking something out for attention still shows in the verb. The gap between the two senses is small: a mark made on a thing becomes a mark made in speech, a comment that points at what has been seen.
