Etymology: The verb "reidentifies" is the third-person singular form of "reidentify," which is simply "re-" attached to "identify." The "re-" prefix comes from Latin, where it meant "back" or "again," and in English it has long been used freely to attach to existing verbs, so "reidentify" means to identify something anew, once more, after an earlier identification. The more interesting shift is in what the verb does with people and things. Plain "identify" concerns recognising what something is, but adding "re-" lets the word describe a change of standing: someone or something is given a new name, role or meaning because circumstances have moved on. A public figure might be reidentified after a scandal, or an old building reidentified as a museum, and the earlier identity is still present in the background.
