Rehold
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- To gaze upon something again ; to take another look at something previously seen
- Looking once more at an object or scene ; viewing or observing something for a second time
- To see or behold again after having already observed ; to revisit visually an already witnessed subject
Etymology: The verb is built from the prefix "re-", meaning "again", and "hold". Old English "healdan", the source of "hold", could mean to keep watch over or regard something, not only to grip it. That older sense survives most clearly in "behold", which combines "be-" with the same root. "Rehold" therefore means, in effect, to regard something again. The word is rare, and its early history is thinly documented, so the exact date it entered English is uncertain. It most likely arose as a transparent formation on the pattern of "rebuild" or "recall", where "re-" is simply added to an existing verb. Its meaning is clear from its parts, which may explain why it has seldom needed a fixed history of its own.
