Etymology: "Rehabbing" is the present participle of "rehab", a clipping of "rehabilitation" that has been shortened for everyday speech. "Rehabilitation" itself traces back through Late Latin "rehabilitare", meaning to restore or make fit again, built from the prefix "re-" and "habilis", "able" or "fit", the same root that gives English "habile" and "habit" in the sense of a settled condition. The clipped form took on a sense that its parent word rarely carries in ordinary speech. "Rehab" began as a term for medical and penal recovery, then spread into the language of addiction treatment, where it became the everyday word for a stay in a clinic. Only later did it loosen into the trade of restoring old houses, so that "rehabbing" now usually means fixing up a tired building rather than helping a person recover.
