Reglue

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. To stick something back together again by applying adhesive once more to pieces that have come apart
  2. Fastening broken or separated parts anew with glue so that they hold together once more
  3. Bonding something that had come loose back into place using fresh adhesive

Etymology: "Reglue" is about as transparent as English compounds get: the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "back", attached to "glue," so the verb means to glue something back together. "Glue" itself came into English from Old French "glu," which in turn traces to Latin "glus" (or "gluten"), the sticky substance that binds things, a root that also gave English "gluten" and "glutinous." Using "re-" with an existing verb to signal undoing a break or restoring a previous state is a common and productive pattern, so "reglue" follows the same logic as words like "rebuild" or "retie."
