Etymology: "Registered" is the past participle of "register", and its story runs through a Latin verb meaning "to carry back." The Latin "regerō" combined "re-" (back) with "gerō" (to carry, bear), so its original sense was of bringing something back to be recorded. From it came Late Latin "regesta," meaning a list of recorded items, and Medieval Latin "registrum," a book in which such items were written down. The idea of a physical ledger is therefore built into the word from the start.
