Etymology: "Refounden" is an archaic past participle of "refound," meaning to establish again or to set up on a new basis. Its parts are the prefix "re-," meaning "again," and "found," the verb meaning to establish or lay a foundation. That "found" comes through Old French "fonder" from Latin "fundare," "to lay a base," from "fundus," "bottom" or "base." English has a second verb "found" that looks identical but comes from a different Latin source, "fundere," "to pour." That verb meant to melt and cast metal, as in founding a bell or a cannon, and it reached English through Old French "fondre." The two verbs share a Latin ancestor but developed separate senses, so the participle here belongs to the building-and-establishing sense rather than the casting one.
