Etymology: "Refinishing" is simply "refinish" with its present participle ending, and "refinish" is a plain compound: the prefix "re-", meaning again, attached to "finish". The "finish" part traces back through Middle English "finishen" and Old French "finir" to Latin "finis", meaning end or boundary, so to finish something was originally to bring it to its end or limit. Put together, the verb means to bring a surface back to its end state, that is, to strip or sand an old coating and apply a new one. The logic of the word is almost literal: the surface gets a second finish, and "refinishing" names the ongoing work of giving it one.
