  2. To present or exhibit for another time after having been shown before

Etymology: "Reexhibit" is simply the prefix "re-", meaning "again," joined to "exhibit," which comes from Latin "exhibere," meaning "to hold out" or "to present." Put together, the word means to show or display something once more, such as putting a painting back on public view after it has been returned from a loan or a tour. The base verb has a more physical root than its modern gallery sense suggests. "Exhibere" combined "ex-," meaning "out," with "habere," meaning "to have" or "to hold," so the original image is of holding something out for others to see. Because "re-" attaches freely to English verbs, speakers can add it to almost any display verb whenever an object is shown a second time.
