Etymology: The idea at the heart of this word is a set of scales. Latin "examen" meant the tongue or pointer of a balance, the needle that swings to show whether two pans are level. It derived from "exigere," to weigh out, built from "ex-" and "agere," to drive or do. To examine something was, originally, to weigh it until the needle settled. From "examen" came the Latin verb "examinare," to weigh or test, and the agent noun "examinator," one who weighs. English took "examiner" from this line through Old French, so the modern word still carries that sense of careful measurement. The prefix "re-" comes from Latin and means "again" or "back." A reexaminer is therefore one who weighs the pans a second time, a transparent formation from an existing English noun.
