Redrill
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- To perform an additional drilling operation, often to correct or improve a previous hole or to increase its depth or diameter
- To redrill means to create a second hole in the same place or nearby, usually to fix alignment or enhance the original drilling outcome
- The act of drilling again into a surface or material to adjust, repair, or extend an existing hole for functional or structural purposes
Etymology: "Redrill" is a plain formation: the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "once more", attached to "drill". The verb therefore means exactly what its parts suggest, to drill once more, as when a hole comes out wrong or a well is bored a second time. "Drill" itself is the older and more interesting part. It came into English from Middle Dutch "drillen", meaning to bore or turn round, and its basic sense of piercing a hole by rotating a tool still lies under every use of the word. "Re-" is one of the most productive prefixes in English, and it attaches freely to verbs of this kind, which is why "redrill" can be coined whenever a drilling job needs repeating.
