Etymology: The robin's name is one of the plainest in English: a compound of "red" and "breast," written in Middle English as "redbreste." Nothing about it is a metaphor or a borrowing, and the parts mean exactly what they say. The bird's orange-red chest is the feature that gave it its name, and English speakers were calling it that long before the modern bird-watching vocabulary of "Erithacus rubecula" arrived. The compound's second element carries the older sense. "Breast" in Middle English referred to the front of the body generally, so the name describes the whole upper front of the bird rather than a single patch of feathers. Its survival into the holiday imagery of Christmas cards is a later association layered on top of the same descriptive label.
