Etymology: Latin "recordari" meant "to remember," and it was built from "re-" (back) and "cor," meaning "heart." The Romans pictured memory as something kept in the heart, so to recall a thing was, literally, to bring it back to the heart. Through Old French "recorder," the word reached English as a verb for calling something to mind. It also took on a legal sense, to put something formally on public record, and the noun for a written account grew out of that use. The spelling "recorde," with its final "e," survives in the surname of the Welsh mathematician Robert Recorde.
