Reccy
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A reconnaissance mission often conducted by military personnel to gather information about a specific location or target
- An informal term for an exploration or survey trip to assess the features of a place before undertaking a task
- A short form of reconnaissance, referring to the act of scouting an area for strategic purposes or personal planning
Etymology: "Reccy" is a shortened form of "reconnaissance," the military term for scouting ahead to gather information about enemy positions or terrain. The "-y" ending, a common informal suffix in British English, was added to the clipped stem, so "recce" and "reccy" are spelling variants of the same clipping. The surprising twist is that the same clipped shape also has a second, unrelated source: "rec," short for "recreation ground," with the same "-y" suffix. A football fan might say they are off for a "reccy" of the local park, though the word is most often used for the military sense. The two origins converged on the same spelling by pure coincidence, so a single word now serves two unrelated meanings.
