Etymology: "Reattempt" is a plain compound: the prefix "re-" ("again") attached to "attempt." The base word has a longer history. "Attempt" comes from Latin "attemptare," built from "ad-" ("toward") and "temptare" ("to test, try, or handle"), which is also the source of "tempt." Old French carried it forward as "atempter," and Middle English borrowed it as "attempten" before the modern form settled in English. The original sense of the root is closer to probing or testing than to making a bold effort. "Tempt" and "attempt" are therefore cousins: both trace back to the idea of putting something to the test. Over time "attempt" came to mean a deliberate try at a goal, and "reattempt" simply adds the sense of trying that goal once more.
