Etymology: "Reapplications" is the plural of "reapplication," a noun built from the verb "reapply" plus the suffix "-ation." The verb is itself formed from the prefix "re-," meaning "again," attached to "apply," which came into English in the late 1300s from Old French "aplier," from Latin "applicare," "to fold or attach to." The sense of attaching or bringing something to a surface gave rise to the modern idea of putting a substance on again, as in reapplying sunscreen. "Reapplication" itself is a much later formation, and the "-ation" suffix, which turns a verb into a noun of action, was widely used in English from the 1500s onward to name processes such as "application" itself. Its plural simply counts separate instances of the action, so each reapplication is one more round of putting something on.
