Realisations

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. The act of becoming aware of or understanding something clearly, particularly regarding one's thoughts or feelings
  2. The process of bringing a concept or an idea into reality through understanding or insight
  3. The stages of achieving comprehension or acknowledgment about a situation or one's own choices

Etymology: "Realisations" is the plural of "realisation", which comes from French "réalisation", a noun formed from "réaliser" in the sense of making something real or actual. English took the word on that French model and built it as "realise" plus the suffix "-ation", a pattern that turns verbs into nouns of action or result. The sense of "moments of understanding" grew out of the older meaning of "realise" as "to make real" or "to bring into being". Someone who realises a plan turns an idea into fact, and the same verb came to mean grasping a truth so fully that it feels real. A realisation is therefore the point at which something once only imagined or half-known becomes solidly present in the mind.
