Etymology: "Readouts" is the plural of "readout", a noun formed by turning the phrasal verb "read out" into a noun. The verb "read out" has the sense of reporting or displaying something as it is read off an instrument, so its noun form names the display itself, the figures or graphic shown on a gauge, screen or machine. The pattern behind the word is common in English: a phrasal verb such as "lock up", "break down" or "check in" becomes "lockup", "breakdown" or "check-in" when it is used as a thing. "Readout" follows the same route, and its plural simply adds the ordinary "-s" to form "readouts", as in "the readouts from the sensors". The word is therefore a plain, transparent formation with no older history beyond the English verb it comes from.
