Etymology: "Readies" is the third-person singular present of "ready" used as a verb, meaning to make something prepared for use. It is formed by adding the regular "-s" ending to "ready" in its verbal sense, and the verb itself comes from the adjective "ready." The more surprising route runs through money. The verb sense is built on the phrase "ready money," meaning cash that can be paid on the spot, and "ready" in that phrase carried the sense of immediately available. From there the notion of having something at hand, then of getting it into a usable state, gave us the verb to "ready" a thing for action.
