Etymology: Rajahmundry takes its name from a king. Rajaraja Narendra, an 11th-century ruler of the Chalukya dynasty, held sway over the city, and the place came to bear his name. The "Rajaraja" part is a title and name built on the Sanskrit "raja," meaning king, while "Narendra" means something like "lord of men." The city sits on the banks of the Godavari River in the southeast of India, in Andhra Pradesh. Its name is therefore a record of royal patronage: a dynasty's ruler stamped his identity onto a settlement, and the name outlasted the dynasty itself.
