Etymology: "Railwaymen" is simply the plural of "railwayman," a compound formed from "railway" and "man." The second element traces back through Old English "mann" and Proto-Germanic "mann-" to a root shared with many Indo-European languages, meaning a human being, a person, or a male adult, which is why "-man" has long been used to name people by their trade or task. The first element, "railway," is the older and more interesting piece. It was built from "rail," a bar of iron or wood laid along a track to guide wheels, joined to "way," a path or route. Put together, "railway" named a track of rails over which vehicles ran, and the trade name "railwayman" simply followed the same pattern used for "fireman," "craftsman," or "milkman."
