Etymology: "Railmen" is the plural of "railman," a compound built from "rail" and "-man," the old English-language formation meaning a person who works at or with the thing named. The first element, "rail," is an ordinary English word for a bar or horizontal beam, which in railway use came to mean the iron track along which trains run. Combining it with "-man" gives a plain, transparent label for someone whose job is the railway line itself. The plural simply adds "-s" to the singular. Because the parts are so transparent, the word needs little explanation beyond what each piece contributes: the track, and the person who works on it.
