Etymology: Radiotherapeutist is a noun built from two pieces that each carry a long history. The first, "radio-", comes from Latin "radius", meaning a ray or spoke of a wheel, and in English it came to name the emission of rays of energy. The second, "therapist", traces back through Latin and French to Ancient Greek "therapeutes", a servant or attendant, from "therapeuein", to serve or to care for. Its sense of medical treatment grew out of that idea of attending to someone. The Greek root reached English through the medical word "therapy", which was borrowed from New Latin "therapia", itself taken from Greek "therapeia", meaning healing or attendance. Adding the agent suffix "-ist" to "therapy" produced "therapist", a person who practises such care. Radiotherapeutist is simply "radiotherapist" with a longer ending, formed by attaching "radio-" to "therapist" to mean one who treats illness with radiation.
