Raddest
Part of speech: adjective
Definitions
- Slang for the most impressive, excellent, or cool, used to praise something as the best of its kind
- Informal superlative meaning the coolest or most awesome thing among a group of similar things
- Describing something as the most totally excellent or fantastic, a casual term of enthusiastic approval
Etymology: "Raddest" is the superlative of "rad," so its story is really the story of "rad." That word began in American English in the 1960s as slang for something excellent, a sense borrowed from the earlier "radical," which had itself been used as a slang term of approval for things that were extreme, bold, or unconventional. The shortened form took on that enthusiastic, slightly countercultural glow and spread through youth speech. Adding "-est" to "rad" to get "raddest" follows the pattern English uses for any one-syllable adjective, so the form is regular rather than a special creation. Its meaning is the top degree of the same approval: the coolest of a group, the best of all. Because it is a superlative, the form usually appears with a plural or collective noun in view, as in saying one thing is the raddest of several.
