Etymology: "Raciest" is simply the superlative of "racy," so its story is really the story of the adjective it modifies. The base word comes from "race" in the sense of having a distinctive taste, especially said of wines and fruits, with the suffix "-y" added to mean "having the quality of." A racy wine was one with a sharp, characteristic flavour that identified where it came from, and that original sense of pungent distinctiveness is the thread that runs through the word's later meanings. The move from taste to suggestiveness is the surprising part. A word that once praised the bold tang of a vintage came to describe anything with a lively, spirited, or risqué edge, and eventually material that is sexually suggestive. "Raciest," as the most extreme form of that sense, therefore describes the content judged the most daring of all.
