Etymology: "Racialize" is a plain formation: the adjective "racial" with the verb-forming suffix "-ize" added to it. "Racial" itself entered English in the 1800s from French "racial", which was built from the noun "race" with the Latin-derived adjective ending "-al". The "-ize" ending has a longer pedigree, arriving from Greek through Late Latin and Old French before reaching English, where it became a productive way to turn nouns and adjectives into verbs meaning "make into" or "treat as." The base noun "race" traces back through Middle English to Old Norse "rás" and Old English "rǣs", ultimately from a Proto-Germanic root meaning "running" or "rush," so the word first carried the sense of a swift course before it came to mean a group of people. Because "racialize" is a compound of two ordinary parts rather than a word borrowed whole, its meaning follows directly from them: to make something a matter of race, or to view and treat it through racial categories.
