Etymology: "Raced" is the past tense and past participle of "race," so its history is the history of that verb. The verb comes from a Middle English noun, drawn from Old English "rǣs," meaning "swift or violent running, rush, onset," and from Old Norse "rás," meaning "a running, race." Both trace back to a Proto-Germanic word for "a course." That Germanic word goes further back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "to flow, rush." The verb's sense of hurrying along quickly comes straight from that original idea of rushing motion, and the sporting sense of a contest came later.
